Tenerife Charity News.
As you know we have a guiding business in Tenerife but we also aim to "Give something back" to children in need , by giving up our time to lead charity walks in both countries. (So far, in six years, with your help, over £13,359 has been donated to various charities the San Lazaro Home in Tenerife, a respite home for children with cerebral palsy, Martin House, a Home for British children with terminal illnesses and Kisakye Trust for Ugandian children with HIV).

On Tuesday 11th. March, Eve, Stephanie, Rosie and myself, met Loli, the the driving force behind the San Lazaro Home for children with cerebral palsy, at the location for the proposed new school and Eve presented Loli with a cheque for 2,000€.
Loli, whose daughter, Martha, died a number of years ago, opened a respite Home for children with cerebral palsy, whose well-being and social/educational development, had been largely ignored by local authorities and even families themselves. With a dedicated, mostly voluntary staff and financial support, she has improved both the condition of these children and their situation whilst, during this period, increasing the number of children in her residential and day care from eight, six years ago, to thirty-five children(eighteen residential) and residential courses for adults.
During these last six years, together with other charitable organizations, we are delighted to have been involved in providing facilities such as :- hydraulic ramp for the mini-bus bringing children to the Home, developing a heating system for the hydro-therapy pool, installation of a lift (for wheel-chair users) , an adjustable exercise table and this year, a contribution towards the school.. It is expected that over thirty children and a similar number of adults will be educated by three established school teachers and a number of trainers, masseurs, psychologist and speech therapist.
Now, the local authorities are responding with financial support but, as in the UK, there is always a need for additional funding from the voluntary sector. As part of our policy of “giving something back” to this island which has given such pleasurable walking, we hope you would agree that supporting Loli’s dedicated work for these children will bring as much pleasure as we all receive from walking on this wonderful island.
Loli’s energy and determination has impressed us tremendously and was the key factor in involving us in her enterprise through donations given by our walkers during our Sunday strolls, now amounting to over 15,000€. We hope you will continue to support this project. See Derbyshire charity walks weekend.
In 2007, we supported the Kisakye Children's Trust, which has set up a hospital in Uganda for children with HIV. Further information is available on line at www.kisakye.org Our son, Stephen, is the honorary secretary. There is great hope for saving thousands of young lives in this area devastated by Aids. £700 UK was collected and donated to the fund. (We do not deduct any expenses from the proceeds). We do ask for a donation of £5 per person per walk (though many were far more generous). Our sincere thanks to all who contributed.
Attendance on the walks was in the range 20 to 35. No rain on all three days and the evening meals at Hartington and Buxton were excellent, as was the professional performance of G & S "Patience" at Buxton Opera House. It was an additional pleasure to meet old acquaintances, all looking very fit.
